The Freelancer Career is one of the career options available in The Sims 4. Unlike traditional careers that require Sims to follow a fixed work schedule, the Freelancer career allows Sims to work independently by accepting and completing gigs for various clients.
This career offers a high degree of flexibility, as Sims can choose which projects to take on without having to report to a workplace at specific hours. Several specializations are available, including Freelancer Writer, Freelancer Programmer, and Freelancer Digital Artist.
Freelancers earn income by completing gigs. Each project comes with its own requirements, deadlines, and payment rates. In general, the more challenging a gig is, the higher the Simoleon reward upon successful completion.
This guide covers every aspect of the Freelancer career in The Sims 4, including how to join the career, how the gig system works, skill requirements, and strategies for maximizing both income and career progression.
Overview

The Freelancer Career in The Sims 4 allows Sims to work independently by choosing their own projects and setting their own schedules. This system closely resembles real-world freelance work, where income is earned by completing contracts accepted from clients.
The Freelancer career is available in the base game and can be accessed through a Sim’s phone by selecting Business > Find Job. After joining the career, Sims can choose an agency that matches their preferred area of expertise.
Unlike most careers in The Sims 4, the Freelancer career does not feature promotions or traditional career levels. Instead, career progression is determined by a Sim’s ability to complete Gigs, which are work contracts offered by freelance agencies.
As a Sim’s skills improve, more valuable gigs become available. Higher-level gigs generally offer better pay, but they also come with more demanding requirements and complex objectives.
In the base game, there are three Freelancer agencies to choose from:
- Computer Experts — Focuses on programming-related work for Freelance Programmers.
- Electrified Artists — Focuses on digital art and illustration projects for Freelance Artists.
- Fighting Words — Focuses on writing assignments for Freelance Writers.
Each agency offers a unique selection of gigs, with skill requirements and objectives tailored to its specific specialization.
Recommended Traits for Freelancers
Choosing the right traits can help Sims complete gigs more efficiently. Since each Freelancer agency focuses on a different field, the recommended traits vary for Programmers, Artists, and Writers.
Traits for Programmers
Freelance Programmers rely heavily on the Programming skill, making the Focused emotion ideal for faster skill gains and improved productivity.
- Genius: The most highly recommended trait for Programmers. Sims with this trait gain Focused moodlets more frequently, making it easier to create programs, perform hacking tasks, and complete advanced gigs.
- Geek: Provides benefits when using computers and playing video games. In addition to helping maintain the Fun need, this trait complements a Programmer’s daily activities perfectly.
- Loner: Most programming work is done on a computer and requires very little social interaction. The Loner trait slows the decline of the Social need, allowing Sims to work for longer periods without needing to socialize.
Traits for Artists
Freelance Artists focus on creating digital artwork and paintings. Because of this, the Inspired emotion is the most effective state for improving artwork quality and developing the Painting skill.
- Creative: The most important trait for Artists. Sims naturally gain Inspired moodlets more often, making it easier to produce high-quality artwork.
- Art Lover: Allows Sims to gain inspiration from interacting with works of art. They also enjoy living in environments filled with paintings and artistic decorations.
- Perfectionist: Artwork takes longer to complete, but it is generally of higher quality than work created by Sims without this trait.
- Loner: Especially useful for Artists who spend long hours working alone with an Easel or Digital Sketchpad without being interrupted by social needs.
Traits for Writers
Freelance Writers benefit the most from the Inspired emotion, as it helps improve writing quality and increases the chances of producing high-quality books.
- Creative: The best overall trait for Writers. Regular Inspired moodlets help Sims create better books and develop the Writing skill more quickly.
- Bookworm: Provides several benefits related to reading and writing activities. Sims can also use certain book interactions to gain additional inspiration.
- Loner: Writing is a time-consuming activity that is usually done alone. The Loner trait allows Sims to remain productive without constantly needing to satisfy their Social need.
Recommended Moods
In general, Focused is the ideal emotion for Programmers, while Inspired is the best emotion for both Artists and Writers. Ensuring that a Sim is in the appropriate emotional state before working on a gig can speed up skill development and improve the quality of the final work.
Getting Started
After understanding how the Freelancer career works and choosing a specialization, the next step is to start accepting gigs and completing contracts for clients.
Joining the Freelancer Career

To begin a Freelancer career, open your Sim’s phone and select Business > Find Job > Freelancer. You can then choose one of the available specializations:
- Writer
- Programmer
- Artist
Once a specialization is selected, your Sim will join the agency associated with that profession.
All Freelancer branches require a computer to complete most tasks. For Artists, it is highly recommended to purchase a Digitalistic Sketchpad, which can be found in the Misc Electronics category in Build Mode. This item is required for many gigs involving digital artwork.
Choosing a Gig

Available gigs can be viewed through either the Career panel or your Sim’s phone. Each gig has specific skill requirements that must be met before it can be accepted.
Improving relevant skills unlocks access to more challenging gigs with higher payouts. Each agency offers a variety of contracts with different client requests, job descriptions, and difficulty levels.
Every gig has a completion deadline. Once a contract is accepted, your Sim can begin working on it immediately without waiting for a scheduled work shift.
Successfully completing gigs increases both your Sim’s earnings and career performance, while missing deadlines can negatively impact career progress. After finishing a gig, Sims can immediately accept a new contract, even on the same day.
Completing a Gig

Once a gig is accepted, the Career panel will display a list of objectives that must be completed. Early tasks often involve communicating with the client or researching project references.
Afterward, additional interactions become available through the Freelancer menu on a computer. This menu contains all activities required to complete the project, from creating the work itself to submitting it to the client.

During the final stage, Sims are usually required to submit their completed work for client review. If the project does not meet the client’s expectations, revisions may be requested before the contract can be officially completed.
This workflow applies to all Freelancer specializations, including Writer, Programmer, and Artist. The primary differences are the skills used and the types of tasks required for each gig.
Freelancer Ranks and Rewards

Although the Freelancer career does not feature traditional promotions, it still uses a Rank and performance system to track a Sim’s career progression.
All Freelancers begin at Rank 0. As Sims successfully complete gigs and improve their performance, they advance to higher ranks. Each rank increase grants a 10% bonus to the base payment of completed gigs.
In addition, clients may provide extra bonuses when they are satisfied with the quality of the work delivered. These bonuses typically range from 10% to 20% of the contract value, meaning that higher-quality work can directly increase a Sim’s earnings.
During the early stages of career progression, Sims also receive rewards for reaching certain milestones. The rewards vary depending on the Freelancer specialization chosen.
- Artist — Receives the Better As A Pair Of Paintings decorative item.
- Writer — Unlocks a reward Laptop.
- Programmer — Unlocks the Overclocking option on computers.
In addition to skill levels and work quality, a Sim’s traits can also affect career progression. The Ambitious trait helps improve career performance more quickly, allowing Sims to reach new ranks in less time.
On the other hand, the Lazy trait tends to slow career performance growth. As a result, Sims with this trait generally require more time and completed gigs to reach higher ranks compared to other Sims.
Because of this, trait selection can have a significant long-term impact on a Sim’s success as a Freelancer.
