The Writer Career is one of the career options available in The Sims 4. It is an excellent choice for Sims who enjoy writing and want to earn Simoleons through published works.
In addition to earning income from books sold to publishers, Sims can advance through the Writer career and unlock various rewards available at each career level.
After reaching a certain point in the career, players can choose between two specialization branches: Author and Journalist. Each path offers a different focus and requires specific skills to earn promotions.
For this reason, developing the right skills for your chosen branch is essential for reaching the top of the career ladder and maximizing your Sim’s growth as a writer.
Overview

The Writer career is one of the most creative professions available in the base game of The Sims 4. It is designed for Sims who want to develop the Writing skill and build a life as a professional writer.
Most activities in this career take place on a computer. Sims spend a significant amount of time writing books, articles, and other forms of written content to fulfill daily tasks and promotion requirements.
Although writing books can generate royalties from published works, the income is usually modest during the early stages of the game. Because of this, the Writer career provides a more stable way to develop writing skills while earning a regular paycheck.
Author or Journalist?
After receiving a promotion to Level 6, Sims must choose one of two specialization branches.
- Author — Focuses on writing books and novels that generate additional royalty income. This path requires the Logic skill to meet promotion requirements.
- Journalist — Focuses on writing articles and reporting on topics related to other Sims. This branch places a greater emphasis on social interactions and requires the Charisma skill for career advancement.
Although both branches revolve around writing, they offer noticeably different gameplay experiences.
Authors spend most of their time working alone at a computer, writing novels and books. Journalists, on the other hand, regularly interact with other Sims to gather information and build relationships.
The best choice depends on your preferred playstyle and the type of Sim you want to create.
Traits and Moods That Support the Writer Career

Because the Writer career revolves around creativity, traits and moods that support writing activities can greatly improve career progression.
The Creative trait is the most highly recommended choice because it helps Sims gain Inspired moodlets naturally. The Inspired emotion provides significant benefits when improving the Writing skill and is also the ideal mood for career-related activities.
In addition to helping with skill development, the Inspired mood also improves job performance, making promotions easier to obtain.
As a supporting trait, Loner is particularly useful because Sims spend long periods working alone at a computer. This trait slows the decline of the Social need, allowing Sims to write for longer without frequent social interactions.
Recommended traits for the Writer career include:
- Creative — Helps Sims gain Inspired moodlets naturally.
- Loner — Slows the decline of the Social need.
- Bookworm — Makes Sims more comfortable reading, researching, and writing.
- Perfectionist — Increases the chance of producing high-quality books, including Excellent and Bestseller works.
- Outgoing or Self-Assured — Highly recommended for Sims pursuing the Journalist branch because they help improve the Charisma skill.
Ideal Mood
The most important mood for the Writer career is Inspired. This emotion helps Sims improve the Writing skill more quickly, produce higher-quality work, and achieve better overall job performance.

Journalist

The Journalist branch features a different daily task from the other Writer career paths. Sims must write articles about other Sims.
Interviewing Sims
To gather information:
- Click on the Sim you want to interview.
- Select Friendly > Interests > Interview About Life or Interview for Story.
- Complete the interview interaction.
Writing Articles
Once information has been collected:
- Use a computer.
- Select Write.
- Choose either Write Positive Article or Write Negative Article.
- Complete and publish the article.
Published articles generate Simoleons and can affect relationships with the Sim who is the subject of the story.
Positive articles improve relationships, while negative articles may damage them. The more articles a Sim writes and publishes, the greater the potential for additional income.
Promotion requirements in the Journalist branch focus on improving Charisma and Writing.
To increase Charisma:
- Practice in front of a mirror using Practice Speech.
- Perform social interactions with other Sims.
Like the Author and standard Writer branches, the ideal emotion for Journalists is Inspired. Keeping an Inspired moodlet active helps improve both skill progression and job performance.
