In addition to the Horse, the Dog is also a pet in Harvest Moon: Back to Nature. This animal will accompany you and can help with several activities on the Farm.
At the beginning of the game, you will be introduced to a Puppy that you will care for until it grows into an adult. If your Dog has a sufficiently high Heart Level, it can participate in the annual Festival.
Growth
As explained above, at the beginning of the game, you will take care of a Puppy. Over time, it will grow into an Adult Dog.
The Dog starts with an “intelligence” level of 0 (a hidden value), and it will never decrease.
This intelligence is a statistic that determines how well it performs when participating in the Dog Race Festival.
You can increase this statistic by training it with a Toy Ball. The ball can be purchased from Won.
Throw the Toy Ball in front of your Dog, and it will run to retrieve it. The Dog’s intelligence will increase by 3 points per day.
To reach the maximum level, you need to train it regularly for at least 85 days. If cared for lovingly for 60 days, the Dog will reach maximum Affection.
Dog Affection
Initially, the Dog’s Heart Level starts at 10 AP. However, you can increase or decrease these points by performing certain actions.
Whistling and picking up the Dog can increase its Affection by 2 points. Meanwhile, hitting the Dog with tools will significantly decrease its Affection.
Activities that increase or decrease Affection can only be performed once per day. Like the Horse, the Dog cannot become sick or die.
The following table shows the Affection Points for the Dog.
| Action | Affection Point |
|---|---|
| Pick up | +2 AP |
| Whistle | +2 AP |
| Ignore it throughout the day | -1 AP |
| Leave it outside during bad weather | -5 AP |
| Hit the Dog | -10 AP |
