Fishing in Harvest Moon: Back to Nature is one of the more enjoyable activities. You can spend your remaining time during the day catching fish.
To start fishing, you must first obtain a Fishing Rod.
The process is quite simple. Go to the Mineral Beach pier between 7 AM and 10 AM. You will see Greg standing near the boat.
Talk to Greg. He will ask if you want to catch fish. If you answer yes, he will give you a Fishing Rod.
You can catch fish in all bodies of water available in HM BTN. There are three types of fish you can catch, and each has a different selling price.
In addition to these three types of fish, there is also a chance to catch various types of trash (shoes, cans, and others), cooking recipes, and several other location-specific items.
There are also legendary fish that can be obtained under certain conditions and are easier to catch with the Fishing Pole.
Fishing is done by going to a large body of water and using the Fishing Rod. You must hold the Square button until the bait moves, then release it. The selling prices for the various types of fish are:
| Size | Selling Price |
|---|---|
| Large Fish | 50 G |
| Medium Fish | 120 G |
| Small Fish | 200 G |
Throwing trash away carelessly will increase the amount of trash, but confessing your sins at the Church will reduce it again.
Fishing at the beach during Winter can also give you a Power Berry. The chance of obtaining one is random.
Fish Pond
HM BTN is the first game to introduce fish farming on the Farm.
Any fish you catch (S, M, or L) can be kept in your Rucksack, then taken to the pond next to the Chicken Coop and thrown into it.
You do not need to feed the fish, but feeding them will allow them to reproduce and grow in size (Small to Medium, Medium to Large).
Fish Food can be purchased from the Supermarket. The fish can then be taken out and sold, given as gifts, or eaten.
Some achievements in the game, such as obtaining the Fishing Pole, depend on having fish in the pond or selling a large number of fish.
How to Get the Fishing Pole
The Fishing Pole is an upgraded version of the Fishing Rod. This upgraded rod makes it easier to catch fish in half the time.
To obtain it, you must have at least 50 fish in the pond. Once you have 50 fish, Greg will stop by and be very impressed with your fish pond, so he will give you a Fishing Pole.
Make sure you have at least one empty slot in your Rucksack and do not leave the screen before talking to Greg. Otherwise, you will not have another opportunity to obtain the tool.
Legendary Fish
There are 6 legendary fish that you can catch. Each fish has specific requirements for being caught, and the chances of finding them are higher when using the Fishing Pole rather than the Fishing Rod.
Obtaining all the legendary fish, which cannot actually be kept, will trigger a scene with Greg. He will give the player a special title, “Fishing King.”
Squid can be caught during Summer at Mineral Beach after throwing a Small Fish into the sea as bait.
You must use one Small Fish each day to attempt to catch this legendary fish.
10:00 PM – 5:50 AM
Angler can be caught during Winter at Mineral Beach, either on the beach or at the pier, between 6 AM–8 AM or 10 PM–5:50 AM.
Catfish can be caught during Winter in the underground lake of the Winter Mine.
- Already has a kitchen
- Have made the following fish dishes: Chirashi Sushi, Grilled Fish, Sashimi, and Sushi.
After cooking all four fish-based recipes (Chirashi Sushi, Grilled Fish, Sashimi, and Sushi), Char can be caught in the Waterfall Pond (near the Hot Springs).
Before attempting to catch this legendary fish, you must first sell 200 fish by placing them directly into the Shipping Bin (the Basket or Horse Saddlebag cannot be used).
Sea Bream can then be caught in any season except Summer at Mineral Beach (the beach or pier).
This fish can only be obtained after you have caught all the other legendary fish.
It can be caught in the Lake at the base of Mother’s Hill during any season except Winter.
You can actually try fishing here during Winter and catch Carp. Try targeting the unfrozen area near the bridge.
