One of the main sources of income from livestock in Harvest Moon: Back to Nature is Cows.

These animals can be purchased from Yodel Ranch for 6,000 G. Afterward, the Cow will automatically be brought to your Farm, where you can give it a name and keep it in the Barn.

Adult Cows can produce Milk every day. If you enter one of your Cows in the Cow Festival and win the competition, that Cow will produce Milk G.

In this guide, we will explain everything you need to know about raising Cows, including growth, breeding, Affection, and the products they produce.

After purchasing a Cow from Yodel Ranch, you only need to feed it and talk to it every day. Occasionally, the Cow also needs to be brushed.

Keep in mind that the Cow you purchase is a young Cow. It takes 14 days to grow into an adult and become ready to produce Milk.

Increase its Affection by interacting with it and giving it Fodder to eat.

If you plant Grass in the field, occasionally let the Cow outside to graze, and bring your livestock back inside if the weather is bad.

If you do not feed the Cow on a given day, it will not be able to produce Milk the following day and the day after that (2 days).

If the Cow is left outside the Barn during bad weather, it is highly likely to become sick.

Sick livestock cannot recover on their own, so you need to immediately purchase Animal Medicine from Yodel Ranch. If left untreated, the Cow may eventually die.

    Feed

Cows eat Fodder, a type of dried Grass that can be obtained in two ways.

    • First, you can buy it from Yodel Ranch for 20 G per item.
    • Second, you can plant Grass seeds purchased from the Supermarket.

I personally use the second method more often, which is to buy “Grass” seeds for 500 G per item and plant them in the field so they grow into Grass. Once the Grass has grown, harvest it using the Sickle.

One piece of Grass produces one Fodder item. Cut Grass will grow back after a few days.

This allows you to save money instead of buying Fodder from Yodel Ranch.

You can also let your livestock outside to eat Grass when the weather is sunny.

If the weather is bad and there is no Fodder available in the Barn, simply cut enough Grass and give it to your livestock.

Similar to Sheep, healthy adult Cows can also be bred using a Magic Potion. You can purchase this item from Yodel Ranch for 3,000 G.

While pregnant, a Cow cannot produce Milk or participate in festival competitions until she gives birth.

To care for a pregnant Cow, you only need to interact with and brush her every day.

When her pregnancy reaches the 21st day (counting from the day she first becomes pregnant), she will give birth to a Calf.

A newborn Calf cannot produce animal products, while a Cow that has recently given birth can resume producing Milk as usual.

Cows have three stages of growth: Calf, Young Cow, and Adult Cow.

    Calf

Calves are usually obtained through breeding. They cannot produce Milk yet. After birth, a Calf takes around 15 days to grow into a Young Cow.

    Young Cow

The Young Cow is the growth stage after the Calf. The Cows you purchase from Yodel Ranch are Young Cows.

With proper care, a Young Cow will grow with affection. A Young Cow takes around 14 days to grow into an Adult Cow.

    Adult Cow

At this stage, an Adult Cow can produce Milk every day. A Cow will only produce products if it is in a good mood, healthy, and not pregnant.

Take good care of your Cows, as those with a high Heart Level can produce higher-quality Milk.

In addition, Adult Cows can participate in the Cow Festival. If you win the contest, the Cow will produce Milk G, which has a higher selling price than regular Milk.

    A Cow’s Affection starts at 10 AP, with a maximum of 255 AP (1 heart = 25 AP).

You can increase its Affection by around 4–5 AP per day. Simply talk to it and feed it. Brushing and milking do not provide any Affection Points.

To reach 10 hearts, it takes a minimum of 48 days if you consistently care for it every day.

The Cow’s heart level determines the quality of the products it produces. The following table shows the actions that increase or decrease Affection.

    ActionAffection
    Talk to the Cow+3 AP
    Feed it Grass outside+2 AP
Feed it inside the Barn+1 AP
    Not fed-9 AP
    Hit with a tool-9 AP
Stray dog barks at the Cow-10 AP
Leave it outside in bad weather-120 AP

    Milk

Adult Cows can produce Milk once a day. The quality of the Milk is determined by the number of hearts the Cow has.

A Cow that has won the competition can produce Milk G.

    Milk M150 G4–7 Hearts

    Cheese

To obtain this machine, the main requirement is to upgrade the Barn. Afterward, you can ask Saibara to make a Cheese Maker. The cost is 20,000 G and one Adamantite Ore.

This machine can turn Milk into Cheese. It is also a quick way to make money because Cheese has a higher selling price than regular Milk.
