Fishing is one of the most enjoyable activities in Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town (SoS: FoMT). You can spend your free time catching various types of fish in the waters around Mineral Town.
To start fishing, you must first obtain a Fishing Rod. Zack will give you one when you visit his house at Mineral Beach between 10:00 AM and 3:30 PM.
Before visiting, make sure you have at least one empty slot in your Rucksack to store the Fishing Rod. Otherwise, the event will not trigger.
When you enter his house, a short cutscene will play. Zack will ask if you want to try catching fish. If you answer yes, he will give you a Fishing Rod.
You can fish anywhere there is water. To use the Fishing Rod, stand in front of the water and press the Action button.
When a fish bites the bait, a “!” icon will appear above your head. Press the Action button to reel in the fish.
There are also six fishing spots in Mineral Town:
- Mother Lake
- The small river and bridge leading to the summit of Mother Hill
- The waterfall where the Harvest Goddess resides
- The river flowing through your farm
- The small pond in the Secret Forest
- The sea at Mineral Beach
At the beginning of the game, you can usually only catch Small Fish. After upgrading your Fishing Rod to the highest level at the Forge, you can catch fish of various sizes, rare items, and even Power Berries.
Fish are divided into three size categories: Small Fish, Medium Fish, and Large Fish. Small Fish measure 24 cm or less, Medium Fish measure 25–49 cm, and Large Fish measure 50 cm or more.
Some fish species can be found in more than one size. Each size has a different selling price.

Everything You Can Catch While Fishing
There are various types of catches you can obtain using a Fishing Rod, including normal fish, trash, rare items, and Guardian Fish.

There are 7 Guardian Fish that can only be caught using a Fishing Rod at the Cursed, Blessed, or Mythic level, with a charge level of 6–7.
These fish are rare, and some require specific conditions before they can appear.
After you catch a Guardian Fish, it will immediately be released back into the water.
You cannot keep or sell them. However, your catch will be recorded in the Fish Memo section of the bookshelf.

Arapaima Gigas is a species added in the remake version. You will know that its requirements have been met when the Harvest Goddess sends you a congratulatory letter.
The other Guardian Fish also count toward the total of 50 fish species discovered.
The requirements for catching Huchen remain the same as in the GBA version. However, the Sashimi recipe is now available in the recipe book as part of the kitchen feature.
The Grilled Fish recipe is obtained by cooking a dish that uses Medium Fish as an ingredient. Meanwhile, the Sushi recipe can be learned by cooking dishes using Onigiri, Small Fish, Medium Fish, and Large Fish.

In addition to fish, you can also catch various other items, including trash such as Boots, Fishbones, Empty Cans, and Branches.
Trash items cannot be thrown back into the water, but they can be discarded in the trash cans at Rose Plaza or sold through the Shipping Bin for 1 G each.
In addition to trash, there are several rare items that can be caught in the sea. To obtain them, you must upgrade your Fishing Rod to a specific level.

Bottle Message
Requires a Mithril-level Fishing Rod or higher. This item can only be obtained once. The bottle contains the French Fries recipe, which you will learn immediately after obtaining it.
Afterward, the bottle can be stored in the Cabinet or sold to Huang. Huang will offer between 58,000 G and 67,000 G.
If the offered price is not high enough, you can continue refusing his offers until you receive a higher one.
Pirate Treasure
You can catch Pirate Treasure after upgrading your Fishing Rod to Level 6 (Cursed/Blessed) or higher. This item can also be obtained multiple times.
Pirate Treasure can be sold through the Shipping Bin for 10,000 G or to Huang for 8,000 G–17,000 G. It is also one of the ingredients used in the Summer Sun recipe.
Ancient Fossil
Requires a Level 6 (Cursed/Blessed) Fishing Rod or higher. This item can also be obtained multiple times, but its selling price is lower than Pirate Treasure.
Selling it through the Shipping Bin earns you 5,000 G. Huang, on the other hand, will buy it for 4,800 G–5,700 G. Ancient Fossil is also used as an ingredient in the Summer Sun recipe.
Power Berry
Requires a Mithril-level Fishing Rod (Level 5) or higher. This item can only be obtained once and increases your maximum Stamina by 15 points.
Catching All Fish
In the morning, Zack will visit your farm after you have caught every type of fish.
He will congratulate you on successfully catching all the fish species available in Mineral Town.
Although Zack does not give you a reward, the event still grants +1 Farm Degree Point because it is classified as a Random Event.
You will also receive a congratulatory letter from the Harvest Goddess and complete the Master Angler achievement.
