Fishing is one of the most enjoyable activities in the game. You can spend your time catching a variety of fish at different fishing spots throughout Mineral Town.
To start fishing, you must first obtain the Fishing Rod. Getting it is easy—you simply need to visit Zack at Mineral Beach between 10:00 AM and 3:30 PM.
When you enter his house, Zack will give you the Fishing Rod free of charge. Make sure you have at least one empty slot in your rucksack.
You can fish anywhere there is water. Stand in front of the water and use the Fishing Rod. When a fish bites, an “!” icon will appear above your head. Press the Action button to reel in the fish.
There are six fishing locations in Mineral Town:
- Mother’s Lake
- The small river and bridge leading to the summit of Mother’s Hill
- The waterfall where the Harvest Goddess resides
- The river that flows through your farm
- The small pond in the Secret Forest
- The sea at Mineral Beach
At the beginning of the game, you can usually catch only Small Fish. After upgrading the Fishing Rod to its highest level at the Forge, you will be able to catch Medium Fish, Large Fish, rare items, and even a Power Berry.
Fish are divided into three size categories: Small, Medium, and Large. Small Fish measure 24 cm or less, Medium Fish measure 25–49 cm, and Large Fish measure 50 cm or more.
Some fish species can be caught in more than one size. Each size has a different selling price.

There are 7 Guardian Fish that can only be caught using a Cursed, Blessed, or Mythic Fishing Rod charged to Level 6 or Level 7.
These fish are extremely rare, and some of them require special conditions before they can appear.
After successfully catching a Guardian Fish, it is immediately released back into the water. You cannot keep or sell it. However, the catch will be recorded in the Fish Memo section of your bookshelf.
| Fish | Season | Location | Requirement |

Arapaima Gigas is a fish introduced in the remake version. You will know its requirement has been fulfilled when the Harvest Goddess sends you a congratulatory letter.
The other Guardian Fish also count toward the total of 50 fish species caught.
The requirement for catching Huchen remains the same as in the original Game Boy Advance version. However, the Sashimi recipe is now available in the recipe book as part of the Kitchen feature.
The Grilled Fish recipe can be obtained by cooking dishes that use Medium Fish as an ingredient. Meanwhile, the Sushi recipe can be learned by cooking dishes that use Onigiri, Small Fish, Medium Fish, and Large Fish.
On the morning after you have caught every fish species, Zack will visit your house. He will congratulate you on successfully catching every type of fish in Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town.
Although Zack does not give you a reward, this event still grants 1 Farm Degree point because it is classified as a Random Event.
You will also receive a congratulatory letter from the Harvest Goddess and complete the Master Angler achievement.
In addition to fish, you can also catch various other items. Some of them are trash, such as Boot, Fishbone, Empty Can, and Branches.
These items cannot be thrown back into the water, but they can be discarded in the trash bin at Rose Plaza or sold through the Shipping Bin for 1 G.
Besides trash, there are several special items that can be caught in the sea. To obtain them, you must upgrade your Fishing Rod to the required minimum level, then use the appropriate charge level before casting.
Spring – Bottled Message
Requires a Mithril Fishing Rod (Level 5) or higher. This item can only be obtained once.
Inside the bottle is the French Fries recipe, which is learned immediately after obtaining the bottle.
Afterward, the bottle can be stored in your cabinet or sold to Huang. Huang offers between 58,000 G and 67,000 G for it.
If you are not satisfied with the offered price, you can continue declining until he offers a higher amount.
Summer – Pirate Treasure
Requires a Cursed Fishing Rod (Level 6) or higher. This item can be obtained repeatedly.
Pirate Treasure can be sold through the Shipping Bin for 10,000 G, or to Huang for 8,000–17,000 G. It is also one of the ingredients required for the Summer Sun recipe.
Autumn – Ancient Fossil
Requires a Cursed Fishing Rod (Level 6) or higher. This item can also be obtained repeatedly, but its selling price is lower than Pirate Treasure.
Selling it through the Shipping Bin earns 5,000 G, while Huang will buy it for 4,800–5,700 G. Ancient Fossil is also used as an ingredient for the Summer Sun recipe.
Winter – Power Berry
Requires a Mithril Fishing Rod (Level 5) or higher. This item can only be obtained once and permanently increases your maximum stamina by 15 points.
