Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town (SoS: FoMT) supports up to eight save files, allowing you to start multiple separate games.
When starting a new game, you will be asked to choose your skin tone, character appearance, gender, name, birthday, and game mode.
Once all selections have been confirmed, these settings cannot be changed during the game.
Character

There are four main characters you can choose from when starting a new game. Pete and Claire are the original characters from the GBA version of Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town.
Meanwhile, Yuto and Naomi are new characters added in the remake. In addition to choosing your character, you can also select their skin tone.
Once confirmed, your character and skin tone cannot be changed during the game. However, you can change your outfit at any time.
The mirror inside your house can be used to change your outfit. You can also choose from various available costumes, but only those intended for characters of the same gender.
For example, if you choose Pete, you can wear Yuto’s outfits but cannot wear Naomi’s or Claire’s outfits.
Choosing a Name
Character names are limited to a maximum of eight characters and cannot be changed once the game begins.
The same limitation applies when naming livestock or pets.
Birthday

Like most Harvest Moon and Story of Seasons games, the game uses a four-season calendar consisting of Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter, with each season lasting 30 days.
When starting a new game, you can choose any day as your character’s birthday.
If the selected date falls on the birthday of one of the marriage candidates, that candidate’s birthday will be moved to an alternative date.
For example, if you choose 3 Summer, Popuri’s birthday will be changed to 10 Summer.
This restriction only applies when the selected date matches the birthday of a marriage candidate.

On your birthday, you will receive congratulatory letters from the villagers and marriage candidates through your mailbox.
There is no party or gift exchange, and the villagers will not wish you a happy birthday directly when you interact with them.
After you get married, you can celebrate your birthday with your spouse. Enter your house between 7:00 PM and 12:00 AM to trigger a cutscene.
During the cutscene, your spouse will ask if you know what important occasion is being celebrated.
If you choose the answer “It’s my Birthday!”, you will receive +3,000 LP from your spouse and +20 FP from your child if you have one.
If you choose another answer, you will instead receive a penalty of -2,000 LP from your spouse and -10 FP from your child.
You can also celebrate your spouse’s birthday using the same mechanism. This is why the game does not allow you to choose the same birthday as one of the marriage candidates.
Difficulty Level

There are two difficulty levels to choose from when starting a new game: Normal and Simple.
In Normal mode, you start without any additional benefits and have only 500 G in starting funds to purchase crop seeds.
Simple mode, on the other hand, provides several benefits from the beginning of the game:
- Starting funds of 2,500 G.
- Nine Turnips ready to harvest and nine Turnips that are still sprouting.
- The selling price of items through the Shipping Bin is increased by 20%.
- Giving gifts provides 20% additional FP, but does not provide additional LP.
