Cows, Sheep, Goats, Chickens, and Ducks are not the only animals you can have in Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life (SoS AWL). You can also obtain a Horse and several other pets.
At the beginning of the game, you will receive a Dog. In the following season, Takakura will also give you a Horse. Not only that, in Year 2, you will receive a cute Cat.
In this guide, we will discuss everything you need to know about pets, from Dogs and Horses to Cats.
How to Take Care of a Dog

When you first move to Forgotten Valley to continue your father’s farming legacy, two Dogs will approach you when the scene begins.
Takakura is not a dog lover himself, but reluctantly allows you to keep one of the two Dogs.
There is no real difference between the two Dogs other than their appearance. Both have the same behavior and care requirements.
The Dog you do not choose will be taken by Takakura to the town to find it a new home, so you do not need to worry about what happens to the Dog you did not choose.
After choosing a Dog, you can give it any name you want. It will have a Dog house located right next to your house.
The Dog house also has a food bowl. Don’t forget to give it Mushrooms and wild plants so that it stays well-fed.
In addition, you can train your Dog by teaching it four different tricks. The Dog’s skills will gradually improve if you train it regularly.
A well-trained Dog that has a good relationship with you can help herd livestock around the Farm. You can also call it from wherever you are, and it will always come to you.
How to Get a Horse

Takakura will usually give you a Horse in Summer of Year 1 if you are active enough working on the Farm. He will call you to the Barn in the morning to give you the Horse.
There, he will ask you to guess the color of the Horse you will receive. You will choose a color from several available options, so make sure to choose the color you like.
Note: After choosing the color, you cannot change it. This is also the only Horse you can obtain in the game.
After that, you will be asked to place a feed trough in the Barn alongside the Cows and Sheep.
The Horse occupies a space in the Barn when it is not being used for transportation. It will behave like regular livestock and will enter and leave along with the other animals when called.
The Horse also needs to be fed like other livestock. Make sure to brush the Horse regularly to keep it happy and clean.
How to Ride a Horse
Unlike other livestock, the Horse can be taken outside the Farm and ridden as a means of transportation to help you travel around the village more quickly.
Walk toward the Horse from the side. If you are in the correct position, the “Talk” button will change to “Ride”.
The angle may be a little difficult to find, but as long as you are standing beside the Horse, the option will appear.
Why Can’t You Ride the Horse?
If you cannot ride the Horse, the Horse is most likely sleeping.
To solve this, use the button to call the Horse. The call will wake it up, and you can ride it again.
How to Get a Cat

In Year 2, Romana will come to your Farm. She will tell you that she already has too many Cats and ask if you would like to keep one.
After that, she will give you a Cat.
Like the Dog, you must give the Cat a name. The Cat will live on your Farm.
The pet food bowl located near the Dog house can be used to feed both the Dog and Cat.
So, don’t forget to fill it regularly.
Cat Friendship
Unlike the Dog, you cannot train the Cat. This makes your interactions with the Cat more limited.
You can carry the Cat around the village and introduce it to the villagers. Feeding it will also increase your friendship with the Cat.
Aside from that, the Cat does not do much. It will take naps and interact with the animals around the Farm like a normal Cat.
You can still interact with it to increase your friendship level.
