In Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life, crop hybridization is one of the best ways to increase your income in Year 2 and beyond.
Once you have mastered the basics, you will meet Vinnie, the three-headed plant who lives in Takakura’s house and can produce Generation 2 crops from two base crops.
This guide contains all the information about hybrid crops, as well as how to create Generation 2 crops with the help of Vinnie.
Crop Hybridization

At the beginning of Spring in Year 2, Takakura returns home after purchasing an animal in town.
He explains that someone slipped a packet of seeds into his pocket. The seeds grew into a large three-headed plant, which he then planted in his house.
Additional info: To trigger this event, you need to sell an item or purchase new livestock because Takakura will not go to town if there is no order for him.
Vinnie enjoys being spoken to, and you will quickly discover how talkative he is. Takakura will ask whether you agree to let Vinnie stay with him. Regardless of your answer, Takakura will keep Vinnie.
Warning: Saying no to letting Vinnie stay will cause you to start with a lower friendship level with him.
Vinnie will remain there regardless, so it is better to choose “I Like this funny little guy.“

Keep in mind that Vinnie will not create new types of seeds until you have befriended him. To become friends with him, you need to talk to him frequently.
At first, he will only have one conversation per interaction before telling you that he has had enough for the day. However, you can make him continue talking to you by interacting with him again.
Eventually, he will give you the option to stop talking to him.
Sometimes this option appears several times during a single conversation as he becomes more comfortable with you and talks for longer. Just keep going.
The faster you befriend him, the sooner you can create hybrid crops.
Note: How often he asks whether you are ready to stop talking is a good indicator of how your friendship is progressing.
The more often Vinnie asks whether you want to keep talking, the more he likes you.
Once your friendship meter with Vinnie reaches the red area on the right, indicating a closer relationship, talking to Vinnie again will give you the choice between talking or creating a hybrid crop.

Once you unlock the crop fusion mechanic in Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life, you can give Vinnie two harvests from different crops.
Sometimes, the resulting seed will have a higher quality than one of the crops you provided.
Other times, Vinnie will simply eat one of the seeds and return the other at the same quality.
Tip: Use the save/load trick to prepare for failed hybrid crop combinations.
When you create something new, Vinnie will tell you the name and growing season of the new crop.
The crop’s name is usually a combination of the names of the two base crops used, while its growing season is a combination of the growing seasons of the two base crops.
Combining a crop with a Happy Lamp Flower can create a crop that grows year-round rather than only during specific seasons.
These crops are marked with a striped diamond next to the seed’s name in your inventory.
Similarly, crossing a seed with a Sagesoil Flower produces a crop that can grow in all types of soil.
This is especially useful for hybrid crops with specific soil preferences, allowing you to plant them in other fields. These seeds are marked with a filled diamond next to their name.
Finally, an Upseed Flower will cause the resulting harvest to be S quality when used with a seed or crop.
For more information, see our guide on how to improve crop quality.

Vinnie can create a blue seed if you give him a Trick Blue Flower along with a seed or crop.
Trick Blue Flowers are available at the Turtle Pond every few days during Autumn or can be purchased from Van for 100 G per flower.
The cheapest way to obtain Trick Blue Flowers is to collect them during Autumn and save the flowers you gather for hybridization throughout the year.
Simply give Vinnie 1 flower + 1 crop as if they were a crop or seed, and he may create a blue variant of the specific crop.
The resulting crop looks like its parent crop, and its use in cooking recipes is slightly different because the game treats it as a separate ingredient.
Once you start collecting hybrid crops, Vinnie will occasionally suggest crossing two hybrid crops, giving you hints about which seeds can be combined to create something new when you talk to him.
This does not apply to every hybrid crop, but there are several rare crops that you can create and name yourself before growing them on your farm as usual.
By default, these crops have numbers as their names, which you can change to whatever you prefer.
Vinnie does not provide any information about these crops, so you will need to check the information in your inventory to determine when they should be planted.

Generation 2 Hybrid Tree Recipes
Just like crops, creating a new type of tree requires you to prepare two base tree fruits.
Each resulting seed can be planted in any season and will produce fruit during a specific season. To see the recipes, refer to the list below.
