One of the main mechanics in Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life (SoSAWL) is farming.
You can make use of the available farmland by growing various types of crops.
Harvested crops can be consumed, given to villagers, or sold to earn additional income.
In this guide, we will explain everything you need to know about farming, from preparing the soil and harvesting to the differences between fields and the use of fertilizer.
Preparation

When you first start the game, you will have two fields available for growing crops.
The field with poor soil quality is located right next to the Chicken Coop. This field is 6×9 in size and is ideal for growing fruit trees.
Although the soil quality is poor, you can use fertilizer regularly to improve crop quality.
Meanwhile, the field with average soil quality is located next to the water pump. This field is also 6×9 in size. With better soil quality, you can grow vegetables and fruits here.
How to Get the Third Field

The third field has good soil quality, making it ideal for growing plants from second-generation crops and third-generation crops.
Usually, this field becomes available in Year 2 after Takakura introduces you to Vinnie. It can be ordered through the Ledger for 60,000 G.
After that, wait a few days until Takakura begins clearing the area behind the pasture to turn it into a field. Takakura will call you when he is finished, and the result will be a 9×24 field.
Interestingly, this is the largest field in SoSAWL and can be considered one of the best fields for growing plants to produce the highest-quality crops.
Till the Soil Before Planting

To begin farming, you need a Hoe to till the soil before planting crop seeds.
The basic Hoe can only till one square of soil at a time. However, if the Hoe is upgraded to a higher level, you can till multiple squares of soil at once, depending on its level.
This allows you to save time and energy when performing farming tasks. We have written a guide on how to upgrade tools. If you are interested, click the link above.
Seeds

Crop seeds can generally be purchased at Vesta Farm. However, the seeds available there are only sold at B quality.
To order these seeds, you can talk to Matthew, Cecilia, or Vesta when they are at Vesta Farm.
In addition, there are several other ways to obtain crop seeds, including:
Making Seeds with the Seed Maker
The Seed Maker can be obtained for free through the Daryl Seed Maker event or purchased through the Ledger.
Once you have the Seed Maker, you only need to place one harvested fruit or vegetable into the machine.
After a few hours, the machine will turn one fruit or vegetable into two crop seeds of the same quality.
This method is very profitable because you do not need to spend money buying seeds from Vesta Farm.
Bulletin Board Requests
There are several Requests available on the Bulletin Board that offer crop seeds as rewards.
If you complete the Request, you will receive several crop seeds as a reward. Sometimes, their quality is better than the seeds sold by Vesta Farm.
Hybridizing with Vinnie
If Takakura has already introduced you to Vinnie and you have become good friends with him, Vinnie will offer to create new types of seeds.
To do so, you only need to place two different harvested crops into him. If the combination is correct, Vinnie will produce a new-generation seed.
Plant Seeds According to the Season

Before planting seeds, make sure you check the appropriate season for planting them. Each seed can only grow during certain seasons.
If you plant a seed in the wrong season, it will not grow.
Therefore, we recommend reading our guide on the harvest calendar, which explains which crops can grow during each season.
If a seed can grow during two seasons, you can safely plant the crop in the field at the end of the first season. Its growth will not be affected when the new season begins.
The exception is fruit trees. Fruit trees can be planted at any time and will blossom at the appropriate time. For example, an Apple Tree will blossom in Summer and bear fruit in Autumn.
You can plant the Apple Tree in another season, as long as you keep in mind that the tree requires one year to grow.
After one year of growth, the Apple Tree will mature, blossom in Summer, and be ready to harvest in Autumn. After the harvest period ends, the tree will bear fruit again the following year.
Fertilizer

Although it is not required, we recommend using Fertilizer if you want to produce high-quality crops.
If you have low-quality seeds, you can plant them and produce high-quality fruit (S) by regularly applying fertilizer throughout the growing season.
This method is especially useful for fruit trees. Although it takes a long time, the results are worthwhile because the trees can produce high-quality fruit every year.
We have discussed tips for improving crop quality in detail. Feel free to explore our guides further.
Harvest Season

Throughout the growing season, you can interact with crops to check their growth cycle.
This will provide you with updated information about the crop’s growth stage and when it is ready to harvest.
When it is time to harvest a crop, the square will turn yellow to indicate that the crop is ready to be harvested.
Make sure to harvest the crop immediately. Otherwise, the crop will wither. Withered crops cannot be collected and must be cut down using the Sickle to clear the field.
Once everything has been harvested, congratulations on reaping the rewards of your hard work. You can now use the harvested crops to make food, give them as gifts, or sell them to earn money.
