Like most other Story of Seasons games, in A Wonderful Life, you can get married and have a child who will live with you on the farm.

Marriage is one of the main requirements for progressing through the game. There are eight marriage candidates you can choose from.

It can be quite difficult to decide which candidate you want to marry, as each character has their own unique traits.

Fortunately, you are given a full year to get to know the marriage candidates before deciding whom to marry.

You can read our article about the marriage candidates below.

To get married, you can proactively pursue your chosen candidate or wait until the end of the year and have them propose to you (i.e., a reverse proposal).

The events you see during this courtship period depend on how close your relationship is with them.

    Increasing Affection

The Resident Info page in the game menu displays your relationships with the villagers.

Under each character’s name is their Friendship status. A 100-point bar tracks the friendship level required to trigger events or receive special gifts.

Marriage candidates also have an Affection status below their portrait on the right side of the Resident Info page. This series of hearts shows your romantic relationship with the candidates.

You start the game with 0 hearts, which can increase to 10 hearts. These hearts are one of the factors used when viewing romantic events or proposing marriage.

Increasing Affection (and Friendship) is mainly done through daily conversations and giving gifts.

Marriage candidates can receive several gifts per day, and gifts will affect your relationship on the following day. Some candidates have additional ways to gain Affection:

    • Using tools such as the Watering Can, Sickle, and Hoe while tending crops on the farm will help increase your Affection with Cecilia and Matthew.
    • Using the mirror in your house once a day to change your appearance, such as your hairstyle, hair color, or clothing, will increase Friendship and Affection points with Gustafa, Lumina, Molly, and Rock.

    Heart Events

Another way to increase Affection is by triggering romantic events. These are special scenes between you and a marriage candidate that occur when you have a certain number of hearts (or more) with that character.

Respond positively during these events to increase your Affection with the marriage candidate.

Each marriage candidate has an introduction event (0 hearts), 2-heart event, 4-heart event, 6-heart event, and 8-heart event.

Cecilia, Molly, and Nami have an additional 9-heart event. During these 9-heart events, if you tell:

    • Cecilia: “I love you too!”
    • Molly: “If you’re okay with that, yes”
    • Nami: “Stay at my place”

You have declared your love for that marriage candidate, and no additional romantic events with other candidates will occur.

However, this does not mean you have to marry them. If you choose another response during the 9-heart event, you can still continue seeing romantic events with other candidates.

You must view romantic events in order after reaching the minimum Affection required to trigger them. For example, you cannot skip from the introduction event directly to the 6-heart event.

You must first view the 2-heart and 4-heart events before proceeding to the 6-heart event.

Having more Affection hearts than required to trigger a candidate’s event is normal.

You can see one romantic event per day for a particular candidate, but you can see multiple romantic events on the same day if the events involve different candidates.

Romantic events can also occur while you are riding your horse if you happen to enter the area where the event takes place.

Of course, this does not apply to events that occur when entering a building, as horses cannot enter buildings.

However, for every outdoor area, riding a horse will not prevent the event from occurring.

Weather can change several times a day, affecting certain romantic events.

For example, you may start an event that requires sunny weather, but rain begins at 1 PM. The event will no longer occur until the weather becomes sunny again.

    Blue Feather

On Summer 1, you will be called to the Nature Sprites’ tree, where you will find Ace and Jack arguing over who gets to keep the Blue Feather they found.

Hart tells them that they cannot keep it because the item is meant for finding true love.

He places the Blue Feather in the box outside your house to stop the argument.

Takakura notices the Blue Feather and explains that the item was once used to propose marriage. The theory is that using the Blue Feather to propose will make you happy for the rest of your life.

You can keep the Blue Feather in your bag or outdoor storage.

You cannot discard the item, sell it to Van, or give it as a gift to an unmarried candidate.

    Proposing Marriage

Now that you have the Blue Feather, you can propose to any candidate with 8 or more Affection hearts.

You do not need to see all the romantic events to get married. Hold the Blue Feather in your hand and talk to the person you want to propose to.

You will see a short scene when they accept the Blue Feather. The next step is to wait until after you sleep on Winter 10.

Giving someone the Blue Feather means you can no longer see any romantic events for other candidates or any romantic events you may have missed with your current fiancé.

After giving them the Blue Feather, an event will be triggered the next day when you leave your house between 6 AM and 3 PM. This engagement event will be your first event as an official couple.

Although this event has dialogue choices during the scene, none of the choices will affect the outcome.

This event is not available if you decide to keep the Blue Feather to trigger a reverse proposal after sleeping on Winter 10 of Chapter 1.

    Reverse Proposal

If you have not given the Blue Feather to anyone before sleeping on Winter 10, Takakura will come to tell you that he found someone wandering outside.

He is fairly certain you know who it is. Takakura will give you a list of marriage candidates who have at least 6 Affection hearts and at least 70 Friendship points, regardless of how many romantic events you have seen with them.

You must choose someone from this list to continue the game.

The person you choose will enter your house and ask if you want to marry them. You can accept their proposal (and use the Blue Feather) or send them away.

Accepting the proposal will start the “yay-we’re-married” walking scene, which will occur naturally, as though you had given them the Blue Feather before sleeping on Winter 10.

Rejecting their proposal will end the game.

    Pre-Wedding

Now that you have chosen your partner, it is time to bring them back to the farm to live with you.

A long cutscene will play with you and your new partner as you walk through the valley, visiting everyone to announce your marriage.

There are several small differences during this event depending on who your partner is:

    • If you are engaged to Gordy, Gustafa, or Matthew, when visiting Romana’s mansion, Lumina will only be seen standing off to the side.
    • If you are engaged to Cecilia, Molly, Nami, or Rock, the scene will be different because Lumina leaves after becoming upset at seeing you with your new partner.
    • When engaged to Gordy, the moment at the fireworks brothers’ house will show Daryl shouting from above as everyone watches you walk down the hill.
    • If you are engaged to someone else, Gordy will be the one watching you and your new partner.
    • If you are engaged to Gordy, Gustafa, Matthew, or Rock, visiting Tei and Lou at the Lei-Over Inn will involve Nami.
    • If you are engaged to Cecilia, Lumina, or Molly and have seen some of Nami’s romantic events, you will see Nami leave and walk toward the valley exit because she has run out of money for her stay at the inn.
    • The Lumina and Molly versions show this happening from a distance west of the inn.
    • The Cecilia version takes you directly to the middle of the road from Vesta Farm, where you pass Nami as she walks out of town.

Although you see Nami leave, she will return to the Lei-Over Inn in Chapter 2 as if she had never left.

After finishing the walk through the valley, you will return to the farmhouse with your partner and Takakura.

He will ask your partner if they have a nickname they would like to be called.

The name can be up to 8 characters, with no spaces or punctuation. This nickname cannot be changed after it is confirmed.

You can enter your character’s name or something more interesting.

    Marriage

After you choose the nickname, the three Nature Sprites will call and ask you and your partner to go to the Goddess Spring to see the surprise they have prepared.

A romantic arch hangs over the pond, providing the perfect place for the two of you to make your sacred vows.

Your partner will say several sweet things to affirm their commitment to a lifelong relationship.

The topic of expanding your family will come up. At this point, you can choose to have a boy, a girl, or be happy with either.

If you choose the last option, the game will randomly determine the child’s gender when you begin Chapter 2, which takes place immediately after this scene ends.

This wedding scene was added to the new version of A Wonderful Life. It was not present in the original game.
